Orange
County high school students received brand new Kindle Fire tablets as
an incentive for their performance on the Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test.
The
Central Florida chapter of Sigma Pi Phi handed out 34 tablets to
students at Evans High School in Orlando. The students received high
marks on their FCAT reading exam.
The
students recieved the highest score possible, a five, on the test. The
former principal promised the reward, but money ran out this school
year. That's where Sigma Pi Phi got involved, donating the money for the
Kindles.
"They called
us to the principal's office and they told us you're going to get the
Kindle and we were like wow because we didn't think it was going to
happen," said Ayona McGann.
In a short ceremony Friday members of the professional fraternity presented the students with the early holiday gifts.
"When
you have some kids who have gone on and aced the FCAT you want to
encourage them, but most importantly it also encourages other kids to do
the same," said Irving Matthews, who heads up social outreach for the
group.
The fraternity says it hopes to continue supporting Orange County students.
